MARVIN A. POMERANTZ

Besides being an active businessman, Marvin Pomerantz is active in community and religious affairs. In 1981, he was the recipient of the Oscar C. Schmidt Iowa Business Leadership Award presented by The University of Iowa, College of Business Administration. He was awarded the National Governors Association Award for Distinguished Service as a private citizen in 1980; the Alexis de Tocqueville Award from United Way of Central Iowa in 1986; the Outstanding Philanthropist Award from the National Society of Fund Raising Executives; the Distinguished Iowa Citizen Award from the Mid-Iowa Council Boy Scouts of America in 1990; and the People of Vision Award from the Iowa Society to Prevent Blindness in 1991. He was inducted in 1995 into the Iowa Business Hall of Fame. In 1998, he received the Hancher-Finkbine Alumni Medallion from the University of Iowa and received the Weizmann Institute of Science Tribute for the Rose Lee and Marvin Pomerantz Postdoctoral Scholarship. Mr. Pomerantz was inducted into The National Iowa Varsity Club as Honorary Letterwinner in the year 2000.

Current and past accomplishments include serving as a director on the following boards: Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Iowa; Wells Fargo Bank Iowa, N.A.; Dial Companies; Kemin Industries, Inc.; Stone Container Corporation; Stoner Broadcasting Systems, Inc.; and Berkley Company, as well as President of the Des Moines Community Improvement Committee; member of the Governor's Economic Advisory Council; Chairman of The University of Iowa Foundation; member of the United Jewish Appeal Board of Directors; 1976 Chairman of the Catholic Diocese Dowling Development Program, Phase II; and Mission Leader and Co-Chairman, National Conference of Christians and Jews. He also received the first Philanthropist of the Year Award from the National Society of Fund-Raising Executives in 1986. In April 1987, Mr. Pomerantz was appointed to and elected as President of the State of Iowa Board of Regents; he chaired the Commission on Educational Excellence for the 21st Century to analyze and make recommendations for K-12 education in Iowa in 1997. In 1999, he chaired the March of Dimes Chef's Auction dinner and spearheaded the campaign to enact a Local Option Sales Tax for Polk County schools. He is currently Co-Chair of the Business Forum for Education and Chaired the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation Monopoly Gala in the year 2000.
